double receipt of mail from unix mail server

I have Outlook configured with 2 mail accounts. The first is to our Exchange
server and the second is to a mail server on an HP-UX system (HP-UX 11.23
64-bit Itanium).

All of the mail received from the HP system is received twice - that is, for
every msg in my unix mailbox, I get two copies in my local inbox. I have
done some testing to confirm that there is only one msg on the unix system.
Here is the sequence of those tests:

1) In Outlook, perform mail send/receive to pull latest mail
2) On Unix system, check that mailbox is empty
3) send a mail msg to my unix mailbox
4) check mailbox to confirm there is only the single message
5) In Outlook, perform mail send/receive to pull latest mail

Result - two copies of the mail in my local Outlook inbox and the mail is
deleted from my unix mailbox. Deleting the mail from the unix mailbox is the
proper behavior. Duplicating it in Outlook is not proper behavior.

We have 7 other people in my office with the same setup (getting mail from
Exchange and from the same Unix system) and I am the only one experiencing
this problem, so it must be something I've configured differently, but none
of us have been able to find it, and we are the IT shop for our organization
(a mix of MS and Unix sysadmins and Oracle and SQLServer DBA's)
Has anyone seen this before?

are you using rules to move the mail? if so, do you use stop processing on
the rules?

I do have a bunch of rules that apply to all of the mail coming from this
server. I'm not sure about the stop processing. Where would I check that?

Hmm. Since you're suspecting something in Rules, perhaps I should mention
that I also seem to have a problem with defining a rule to divert certain
mail to a subfolder of Inbox, then seeing other mail show up in my Inbox that
should have been caught by the rule.

So, I ran some additional tests:

1) delete all rules
2) repeat original test -- mail is delivered to my Inbox and did not duplicate
3) create a rule on that mail to divert it to a subfolder of Inbox
4) repeat original test -- incoming mail was processed by rule, sent to
correct subfolder, and did not duplicate
5) create a duplicate of the original rule
4) repeat original test -- incoming mail was processed by rule, sent to
correct subfolder, and *was* duplicated in that folder.

So, that gives me a pretty good idea of how the mail is being duplicated
(though I don't fully understand it) but then takes me to my other issue ...
the creation of seemingly duplicate rules due to a particular message not
being processed by a rule that should have caught it. I'll start with a
clean slate on all rules and monitor that.

Newer versions of Outlook have an action in rules that says 'stop
processing' - when added to a rule, messages affected by that rule are not
checked against the remaining rules.

So, if I understand correctly, let's say I have a rule that says "Apply this
rule after message arrives from Beetle Baily and on this machine only move it
to the Beetle folder" Further, let's say I have two rules that say the same
thing. Now if a message arrives from Beetle Baily, the first rule will drop
it into the Beetle folder, then the second rule will also process it and do
the same?

That leads to my problem if seeming to need duplicate rules, but I'll track
that a while and start a new thread on it.



I vaguely remember seeing the option to 'stop processing' at some time in
the past (have been an Outlook user at 3 different companies) but poking
through all my rules or anything I can find related to it, I don't see that
option. Am currently on Outlook 2003 (11.8217.8202) SP3.

Yes and on top of that, if another rule exists after that as well, you may
get a copy remaining in Inbox too because Outlook wll want to process that
rule as well.
