Double click folders leads to "Search Results"

J

joshua.mayer

This just started happening. The only thing I've done lately is
install iTunes 7. Clicking on any folder on the Desktop or My
Documents or My Computer, etc. leads to "Search Results" with the
location defaulted to whatever folder I was double clickong on. If I
deselect the "Search" button, I see the normal shortcuts on the
left-hand side of the window: Desktop, My Computer, My Doucments, etc.
I can then click on My Documents (for example) and see all of its
contents as the should be. However, when I click on anything in that
folder, a new "Search Results" box pops up. If I right click on any
folder/file, the first option is "Search". There is no option to
"Open" anywhere on the right-click menu, unlike for most people who
seem to have this problem. I should note that any new file/folder
created SINCE this started happening is fine and is immune to all I
described above. Anything created prior is what is affected. I tried
running "regsvr32 /i shell32.dll" and is says it succeeded, but this
seems to have no effect. I've checked the registry values for
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Directory \ shell & HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Drive \
shell and they are both set to "none" as they should be. Spybot and
AdAware show nothing wrong. My next options are a full Norton virus
scan and a System Restore to sometime yesterday. Anyone have any ideas
on what is going on here or how to fix the problem? Thank you very
much!!

An update to my situation: A system restore to multiple previous
restore points all fail. When the computer restarts it says that it
could not be restored and nothing was changed. A Norton virus scan is
in progress.

Ammending my orginal post: it is NOT new files/folders that are
unaffected. I had successfully opened a new Photoshop file earlier and
took that to mean that new files/folders were unaffected. In reality,
it is all Folders / Drives that are affected and only individual files
are okay to click on and show the proper right-click menu. As I wrote
earlier, the main difference between my problem and most other similar
issues I've read, is that the "Open" command is nowhere in the
right-click menu for folders or drives. At the top of the right-click
menu is "Search..." in bold letters. Please help!

Thank you Mr. Saunders for your kind reply. I have downloaded and run
the file you referenced. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have any
effect on the issue. Any additional help is greatly appreciated!

Further information
(sorry for so may posts, just trying to explain it as best I can)

For the Start Menu:

I can click on my recently used programs or the links I have
permanently on the Start Menu above that, such as Internet Explorer,
Microsoft Outlook, and Disk Cleanup. On the righ side, clicking on My
Documents, My Music, My Pictures, My Computer, and My Network Places
all bring up the Search Results box. I can view and click on My Recent
Documents and open those okay. Below that, clicking on Control Panel
or Printers and Faxes brings up a message that says "Windows cannot
create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the
destop instead?" I can click on Set Program Access and Defaults and
that works fine as does the "Connect to" menu. I'm so confused as to
what is happening.

I'll give you some steps to export the whole content of the registry keys.
I'd need as detailed information as possible:

Open Start, Run, type "cmd" without the quotation marks and press ENTER.
Then type these commands one by one:

reg export HKCR\Folder C:\Folder.txt
reg export HKCR\Drive C:\Drive.txt
reg export HKCR\Directory C:\Directory.txt

Then you should post here the content of your C:\Folder.txt, C:\Drive.txt
and C:\Directory.txt files.

This just started happening. The only thing I've done lately is
install iTunes 7. Clicking on any folder on the Desktop or My
Documents or My Computer, etc. leads to "Search Results" with the
location defaulted to whatever folder I was double clickong on.

Click Start | Run and type or copy/paste this command:

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, I have tried this step and it
does not appear to have an effect. I run that command and the
following appears:

DllRegisterServer and DlInstall in shell32.dll succeeded.

So I click OK. But all folders still open to "Search Results".

Also, the Norton full system scan has come up empty - no viruses, etc.

Thank you for your reply. I clicked Edit, New, Key in
HKCR\Folder\shell as you described and no error message appeared. Now,
in "shell", there is "New Key #1" (the default name) and it says "value
not set" under the Data column.

Do

Thank you for your reply. I clicked Edit, New, Key in
HKCR\Folder\shell as you described and no error message appeared. Now,
in "shell", there is "New Key #1" (the default name) and it says "value
not set" under the Data column.

Open Notepad, copy and paste the following text and save the document as
Shell.reg (note the .reg extension, not .txt). Then double-click the file to
merge its content into the registry.

Wow! Everything works now! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! "Open"
is now in its rightful place in the right-click menu for folders and
for My Computer etc. If I could trouble you for an explanation, can
you tell me what was going on with my computer and what was done to fix
it? My level of understanding is basic with the Registry. I know what
it is and I know that it can be edited, but I know nothing about making
particular changes

Again, thank you very much for your kind efforts. They are greatly
appreciated.

You're welcome! The "regsvr32 /i shell32.dll" command should have created
the registry keys I posted before; we simply created them manually via REG
file. I'll investigate the problem further.
