Dot Matrix cannot change from NLQ in driver

Printing to an Epson dot-matrix printer, even if the
printer is set to "utility" mode and font is selected
before the print job is sent, the printer resets to NLQ
and Courier 10. Any ideas? (This appears to happen
regardless of the driver or dot-matrix printer.)

Try using the Microsoft Generic Text driver, it comes with a standard
Windows installation and you can configure it not to send control codes.

Printing to an Epson dot-matrix printer,

Presuming you have properly set the Printing Preferences, Advanced, Print
Quality to Draft, the only other thing I can think of is that your word
processor has assigned a TT-type font to the text. Not having verified this
myself, try to use a "printer"-type font (the symbol looks like a small
printer icon). If I recall correctly, this means to use a font style
contained within the font set that came with the printer's language (Epson
ESC-P or -P2).

Looking through my various systems, I see that InDesign has installed
several fonts that have the printer icon but are definitely not printr-
based fonts. So, be aware.
