DOS on XP

Why won't any of my older games that run off of DOS like
Quake and Duke Nukem 3D run on Windows XP? I don't know
what to do.

XP does not have a complete DOS. It has a DOS emulator, which allows you to
do some DOS functions. Most DOS games can be made to run within a DOS
Command prompt windows, with out sound support. To get sound support, you
need to run a sound emulator like VDMSound.

Hi alejampi1,

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available.

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/downloads/trial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

Your 2 games have quite a cult following, in fact a lot of 3rd
party work has been done to keep them working. For Duke 3D
check out: http://www.rancidmeat.com/project.php3?id=1 and
the Duke Vesa patch at: http://www.advsys.net/ken/build.htm

For Quake, there's a project to port it over to the Direct X engine:
at: http://dxquake.sourceforge.net/ ...

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and: http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm :)
