Do a file search for cmd.com the 32 bit and command.com for the 16 bit.

cmd.com will give you the long file names
command.com will give you the dreaded ~ (tilda)

Using Windows Explorer or whatever you use for a file manager, go to
C:\WINDOWS\system32 (or whatever drive your Windows folder is on). Find cmd.exe
and right click it. Select Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).

If you'd rather have a DOS icon than the "blackboard-looking" monstrosity that
MS assigned to Command Prompt, right click the shortcut icon once it's on your
desktop and select Properties. Click the Change icon... button and navigate to
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pifmgr.dll. Open it. The MS DOS icon is the first one
shown. Select it if it's not already selected. OK. Apply.

Everybody knows it's not really MS DOS, but that icon sure looks better.

Simply right-click on the desktop, choose New, then Shortcut. In
the box "Type the location of the item" just type cmd. Then click
Next and Finish

The resulting shortcut will be what you want.
