Maybe it was compatibility mode. Or creating another primary partition
just for DOS to run the (snicker, snicker) old DOS game, and then using
a boot manager or just changing with partition is active to switch
between operating systems.

i'm receiving conflicting info about 1] partitioning an NTFS drive and 2]
using a boot floppy to run a "pure" dos environment. if you're a wizard,
could you email me? thanx!

haven't asked a question yet, and I won't e-mail you since it is
considered rude to disconnect a discussion from the newsgroup by taking
it offline via e-mail. This topic does not require secrecy.

State why you cannot get the DOS-only game to play within Windows XP.
Does it not install? If so, what errors does it report? Does it not
play? What happens when you try to play it? Stating what game it IS
that you are trying to play would help since then there might be others
familiar with it that could help.

If the DOS-only game fits on a floppy or you are still using a FAT32
partition on which the game is installed then using a DOS-bootable
floppy is one way to go (if it really won't run under Windows XP).
Another way is to use something like PartitionMagic to resize your
current partitions to make room for a new partition that has DOS on it
and use some boot manager, like BootMagic or Bootit NG, to select which
operating system (i.e., partition) to load on a system start or reboot.

Using PartitionMagic will get around several of the "must reformat"
statements in Microsoft's narrow world of disk volume management.
