DOS full screen mostly black

When I ran DOS applications in XP, I could shuttle between window and full
screen using ALT+ENTER. Then something happened to my system. Now the full
screen is mostly black with a tiny inset with text in the center.
Simultaneously another symptom appeared during wakeup from hibernation. Also
the screen is mostly black with the tiniest "Microsoft is ... " in the
center. I don't have system restores far enough back. How can I fix this?

Rightclick the Command Prompt
Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt
Click Properties>Layout tab
There you can change the size.
When finished click Apply & OK

Sorry no. The window is set practically filling the screen in the Layout
Tab. The problem isn't with DOS window size but with what happens with
ALT+TAB full screening while in DOS. I get the full screen, sure, but the
DOS text is squeezed into what amounts to a tiny window inside the black
matte.

I can send a screen shot of this to anyone who's interested.
