I brought a used (old) Computer for my 8 yr old from a thrift dtore and when
I got it home and plugged it in, it asked for a password. Did I just buy a
dud or is there a way to get the password or override it?

I assume its XP/2000/Vista PC. If you send me the computer hash files
I could do the job for you. If you don't know how to get those files
let me know.

There are a couple of possibilities here, I will presume that the
issue is that there is a WINDOWS password, not a hard disk password.

1. You can try the obvious (password, drowssap, admin, blank) for the
Administrator account.
2. You can copy off the SAM database (if standalone/depends on the
version) and try to crack it
3. The easiest solution is to get another copy of your operating
system and do a clean installation. This will also get rid of all the
garbage on the system as well.

Good luck.

Did the unit come with a Recovery CD? You can use this to reinstall the OS.
Check with the store you got this unit from if they have one for your
computer.

There are, in fact, a number of password recovery tools out there; do a
quick goog... err Windows Live Search. I'm not sure if posting them in this
forum is appropriate or not. =)
