Don't get any connection on new pc

Morning,

I have 2 pc which are running XP home edition which are directly connect to
the router with cable. I have no problem in getting internet access. Now I
have an other pc which is XP professional but I can't get the internet
access. The very same cable which I have used on one of the xp home edition
doesn't work on this xp pro machine.

On the local area network, the status said it is connected, firewalled
(microsoft firewall), but at times it does say limited connection. I took
all the default settings.
1. When browse though IE, received page cannot be displayed.
2. When ping an ip address, receiving timeout 'error' message. Can't ping an
site, e.g. google.co.uk.
3. I have tried to assigned an within range ip address but the above 1 and 2
still happened and noticed that when I did an ipconfig/all, dhcp enable was
set to No. WHERE do I set this to yes?
4. If I set to take ip and dns from automatic, the ip address assigned was
169.254.x.x, with this the dhcp was set to enabled when I did an
ipconfig/all
5. I have tried to release and renew the ip address. but no joy.

What need to be checked ????

Many thanks in advance

Right click My Network Places on the Desktop.
Click Properties.
Right click Local Area Connection.
Click Properties.

Under "This connection uses....."
Click "Client for MS Networks".
Click Properties.
Select "Windows Locator" from the dropdown box, if disabled skip.
Click Ok.

Scroll to and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Click Properties.

Under the General tab make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.
Click the Advanced button.

Under the DNS tab:
Selected "Append Primary and Parent DNS suffixes.
Register this connections address in DNS"

Under the WINS tab > NetBIOS:
Selected Default.
Ok out of MNP.
Reboot if required.

Test connectivity:
Open a command prompt, click Start > Run, type in: cmd and press Enter.
At the prompt type each command below and press Enter after each.
**Note: Command noted by =, Space noted by ^. Do not type the = or ^.

=ping ^ 192.168.1.1 *Routers IP, change as necessary.
If it times out then there is no communication between the router and machine.
If not then the machine communicates with the router.

=ping ^ google.com
If it times out then there is no connection to the net.
If not then net connection is established and all is well.

ping 127.0.0.1
If it fails it may be a TCP/IP stack problem.

Ping each computer from the other using the UNC:
=ping ^ computername
If it fails either way there's an IP or Name resolution problem.

If pinging times out on any address, to see if the machines IP is correct along with
other settings.
= ipconfig ^ /all
If anything isn't correct, at the prompt type and press Enter after each command:

=ipconfig ^ /release
=ipconfig ^ /flushdns
=ipconfig ^ /renew
=ipconfig ^ /registerdns
=exit
If that fails reopen the command prompt, run /release and /flushdns only and exit.

Shut down the machine(s).
Pull the power from the router.
Pull the power from the modem.
Wait approx 30 secs.
Apply power to the modem and wait for it to finish synchronizing with the cable.
Apply power to the router and wait for it to finish synchronizing with the modem.
Power up the machine(s).
The machine(s) should now be assigned a new IP from the router.
Run ipconfig or attempt net connection to test.

The 169 address is obtained when the NIC cannot contact a DHCP server (and Windows allocates the 169 address as a result on the non-contact).

Usually the problem is a faulty connection: ie. faulty cable, faulty plugs on either end of cable, faulty port in NC, faulty port in router, other fault in NIC.Try to eliminate those possible causes in the right way by working through the combinations.

Are you 100% sure the NIC is good (i.e. have you tried it in another PC and got a connection).

What about the 4th port in the router, are you sure it's good? Can one of the other PCs connect thru it.

Hi Brian,

I was going to try your suggestion when I got home. I turned the pc back on
and just want to see the status before I do any changes on the settings.
Click on the IE and the google (my home page) appear without a problem.

I did the same thing before I had had enough and shutdown the pc the night
before and have not change any settings at all. I really don't know what
went right and what gone wrong.

Thank you all the same and have a great weekend.

Hi Brian,

I was going to try your suggestion. However, before i was going to do
anything, I was just going to have a last try to get on the internet.
Surprisingly, without changing anything from the night before, I was able to
connect to the internet without any problem.

Baffled

Thank for your help all the same.

Regards,

Rachel
