Domain Setup

Yousuf

Hey,

I'm just trying to setup a domain at my home office since
i plan on expanding to about 10 machines. I currently
have a cable/dsl connection for three machines that all
share that connection. they are all in a workgroup. I am
installing a 2000 server. how do i creat a domain and add
all the other machines to that domain. if someone could
either help me out or atleast point me to the appropriate
place to get the instructions i would appreciate it.

thanks.

I suggest you buy Mark Minasi's book "Mastering Windows 2000 Server" 4th
edition. You do not need to read the whole thing and you will be glad you have
it as problems/questions arise. See the first link below on how to install
Active Directory using dcpromo. You will probably be told that dns is not
configured and if you want dcpromo to it. Just select yes. You need to have a
domain name you want to use ahead of time and the server you promote will need
to have a static ip address and point to itself only as it's preferred dns
server. Be SURE to write down the administrator passwords you use to set up the
domain controller. When you want to join other computers to the domain they must
point to the domain controllers ip address as their dns server. Proper dns
configuration is CRUCIAL in a W2K domain or you will have all sorts of problems.
The domain controller will be the only dns server for your domain computers and
it can be configured to forward to your ISP's dns server to provide internet
name resolution for your computers. --- Steve
