Domain Names - Best Practice

B

Bill

Hi. I am setting up a Windows 2000/Exchange 2000 site.
There will be only one Server, site, domain, tree,
forest. The client is migrating from Netware
4.1x/GroupWise 5.5.
Is it bad practice to use their Internet domain name for
the Windows AD domain name? If so, why?
Thanks,
Bill

It is not a bad practice as long as you understand the issues and
know how to configure you systems.

"One server" would technically make it difficult but as long as you
include the DNS servers of your "registrar" (or ISP) in the solution
it will work out Ok, and that is a good practice anyway.

The problem is that you do not want your INTERNAL names published
on the INTERNET, nor do you really want your DC/internal server to
be exposed on the Internet.

This means that if you use the same Domain/Zone name for both internal
and external purposes you must run a "shadow DNS" setup -- and internal
and external version of the Zone (with the same name.)
