When I upgrade an existing NT4 PDC to a W2K Adv Server DC, is it possible to
retain the existing domain name?

And then promote existing W2K Adv member servers in the same domain?

Not without issues. W2k domains need a DOT formatted domain name like
crazy.com. Your current netbios domain name is probably a single name like
"crazy". You can use the single label domain name but it will cause some
issues later down the road. Once the PDC is upgraded then you can dcpromo
the w2k member to a dc.
