DCPROMO/AD

Bob

Hello,

I am trying to promote a W2K Adv Srvr to a DC into an
existing NT4 domain and when I run DCPROMO and the AD
wizard comes up, I select to add DC to an existing domain
and get the following error. How do I promote and add a
DC with AD in mixed mode to an existing domain?
Please assist.
Thank you.

THE DOMAIN "____" IS NOT AN ACTIVE DIRECTORY DOMAIN, OR AN
ACTIVE DIRECTORY DC COULD NOT BE CONTACTED.

To move from NT 4.0 to Win 2k you must upgrade the existing NT 4.0 PDC first
or set up the 2 domains side by side on the same wire and use ADMT to
migrate users from the NT domain to the Win 2k domain.

See:
How to Set Up ADMT for Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 Migration

The "migration" will not work if you are wanting to keep the same domain
name because to use ADMT you must create a trust between the two domains
which can't be done if they have the same name.

You might also think about removing Win 2k from the server you were trying
to upgrade and install NT 4.0 on it as a BDC while connected to your
existing network, promote to PDC then upgrade to Win 2k and AD.
