domain controller removal

i have 4 domain controllers in my network, but i need to
remove one so that it will not authenticate user logons.
i still do need the resources on the server.

i guess my question is, can i make a domain controller
into a member server?

You sure can. Just run "dcpromo.exe" on a domain
controller, and it will remove active directory and become
just a regular old member server.

i tried the dcpromo and it states that the a valid domain
cannot be found. this is where i got stuck. did i
implement this thing incorrectly?
