Doesn't send on first attempt

Hey all,

I have Outlook 2000 working in Internet Only Mode. When I send an email it
appears in the outbox in italics like an unsent message and then immediately
changes to normal font like a failed to send message. This happens before
the actual send/receive occurs. When the send/receive runs I receive the
following error (somewhat paraphrased):
Error: (Mail Account Name, SMPT Server Name, 0x80040601)

If I open the unsent message in the outbox and click the send button it will
be delivered as it should be. THe account receives mail just fine.

All other accounts in the office using the same domain and mail servers work
fine. If I add a new mail account to this computer the same errors occur.

What gives and how do I fix it?

Did you try not looking at the Outbox and instead letting the send/receive
take place?

Sue,

Thanks for the response. Yes I did. The problem first came to our
attention when sent emails were not showing up at the recipient so it was
happening before we started watch. Additionally I did some sends before
watching the Outbox and the problem was still happening.

Do you have anti-virus software on the client machines that scans incoming
or outgoing email? If so, try turning the scanning off - it seems to cause
lots of problems.

Yes I have. I have turned off the email checking feature of Norton and also
disabled Norton from starting. This had no effect.

Are there any other add-ins to Outlook? You might try starting outlook in
"safe" mode (type "outlook /safe" at a command prompt), which will start
Outlook but not load any add-ins. This behavior usually is linked to some
add-in that wants to inspect messages and doesn't handle submitted messages
properly, leaving them in an unsubmitted state.
