personally I do not know, would think it would refresh some.
if the update works, you might check to see if any drivers need updating again.

it depends on what the problem(s) are whether the repair will work.
it certainly does not hurt to try.
some programs might need to be reinstalled because of replacing system
files.

Does reinstall reinstalls the drivers for the hardware? I think I may have
a driver problem.

Good idea. I will try the driver update.

I read all the answers to your question, now a few months old. You have some
good advice there.

I have tried the repair option using my (legal, hologrammed) XP setup CD
about three times in as many years, and it has never worked. The problem I
kept having was that the CD's repair routine stops short and asks me to
please enter the path of an "ASMS file". Since there is no such file, you
cannot enter the path to it. Since the repair process cannot continue
without this file, in every case I have had to reinstall the operating
system.

I would be interested to know if you encountered this error message about a
missing ASMS file too, and if so whether you found a way around it. If you
did run into this roadblock, would you tell me what year you see on your XP
CD? (Some people apparently have not encountered the error.)

Finally, you might be interested in reading a more lengthy description of
the problem -- a rant actually! -- that I wrote under the topic "reinstall
failes". If you can't find this thread, search on "ASMS", and you'll see my
response to a user named "les", and others.

My entry under "reinstall failes" will reinforce some of the other advice
you've gotten here, concerning when to try the repair logic. The
conventional wisdom is that it's a last resort, and even then it won't solve
all problems. But as I said above, it has never worked for me due to what I
still think is a bug in the XP CD itself.
