does XP Repair Install work?

T

Talal Itani

I am having some problems with my XP PC, and I suspect I need to re-install
XP. Then I learned about the Repair Install. Do you know if repair really
works? Thanks.

Well yes it works, but it depends on the problem you want solving in the
first place. A repair install may or may not be necessary. What is your
original issue(s)?

That depends on the problem. A repair install can repair a corrupt
installation, but it can't necessarily repair a broken app or a virus or
malware infected installation. What types of problems are you having?

That depends. If your problems have been caused by Malware,
no - a Repair Install won't clean your system.

When I boot XP, it takes forever to boot. After the first welcome screen,
and before the windows starting screen, I get a black screen (totally
blank), that remains for about 5 minutes. When I boot in the safe mode,
things proceed normally. Sometimes, if the door of the CD-ROM drive is
open, it crashes and reboots while booting. This is why I think I may need
a clean install of XP or a repair. But I do not know.

XP takes forever to start. Sometimes, the PC reboots before XP completes
the start.

I used the 4 most popular malware detectors and removers. The behavior of
booting my XP is still the same. Would this mean that my problem is not
caused by Malware?

Excerpt from another of your postings within this thread:

| When I boot XP, it takes forever to boot.

Well, nobody can know from afar, what system changes (eg. installation)
you have made prior to the first encounter of this problem. Everybody
would undo that change instantly! Since you did not do that, you're
apparently not aware of any system change and therefore, that change
was performed by malware w/o your knowledge. And no, there is no other
explanation since you failed to post what you've done to your system.

This behavior started weeks ago, but I ignored it, until now. So much
happened between the time it first appeared and now, so I cannot tell what
may have caused it, and I cannot go back to a working state.

XP takes forever to start. Sometimes, the PC reboots before XP
completes the start.

Back up all your data onto another drive, CD, DVD, whatever.
Then format the drive and do a clean install.
You'll spend some time reinstalling your applications and copying your data
back, but when you get done you'll know it's clean.
Beats spending hours and hours of trying to figure out what's wrong with
it.

The time between the first encounter of this problem and now does not
matter at all. What matters is the time between any system change and
the first encounter of that problem. Note that we're talking about the
time to reboot your system after that system change! Everybody remembers
what he's done prior to that reboot "taking for ever". Sorry, if you
suffer from partial amnesy, you cannot expect us to help you out!

No person is beyond help. You think you are incapable of helping me, others
may be able to help me.

It is unlikely that a repair install will help that as it won't remove
anything in the boot sequence. All drivers and programs will be
retained as they are.

I see from other branches in this thread that you have already tried
various programs to scan for viruses and malware. As there are many
things that go on during the boot process, troubleshooting exactly which
one is causing the problem is very difficult without knowing the last
change that was made on your machine just prior to when the problem
first started.

it depends on what the problem(s) are whether the repair will work.
it certainly does not hurt to try.
some programs might need to be reinstalled because of replacing system files.

Have you tried a system restore to a date before this problem arose?

Does reinstall reinstalls the drivers for the hardware? I think I may have
a driver problem.
