To manually install Backup:
Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location on the Windows XP
Home Edition CD-ROM to start a wizard that installs Backup:
CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP
When the wizard is complete, click Finish.

If you don't have an XP CD, you can download ntbackup.msi at:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm#backup_home
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi
*** You may have to hold your Shift key down when clicking on above to save the
file to disk. Note that OEM PC makers dont have to provide all the utils on
their custom XP cds.

I managed to install NT Backup from my XP CD. But, when I tried using the
wizard, I entered a file name on the first screen, but got an error message
saying the file name was not appropriate. Is there a protocol for the name
of the backup file? Is there a special document extension required? I no
longer have a Help Desk to help me so I'm on my own and not very knowledgable
about technical issues.

Exactly what was the file name you tried to use?

Re the name I tried to use, I don't recall exactly, but it was something
simple like "backup 5-3-06". I looked around on the Microsoft support
website today and found an article by Microsoft's Ed Bott called "Windows XP
Backup Made Easy." I printed it and will try following those instructions.
Maybe that will help me. Any other advice is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks, I installed the backup utility after reading your reply. I've heard
about it, but was never able to find it.

I use a 70Gig USB drive for backups. I got 11 Gigs total on my "C Drive",
and after trying to backing the drive up, stopped at 4Gigs. I know that's the
maximum file size.

Does this utility break the backups up to several 4Gig files??

I use Norton 9.0, and that's what it does. I see it compresses data, but
over the long run, I don't think this would help me either.

I use Norton 9.0 on other PC's, but it seems I had trouble using Norton on
this particular PC.

That's odd - I don't see anything "illegal" in that file name. Dashes and
spaces are usually allowed. But, who knows if maybe that program is the
exception. Stranger things have happened. Maybe try sticking to 8
characters, and don't add an extension - let the program do that.

Yes it does but it's not installed. You need to install it from your Windows
XP CD. You should find it in the ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder.

If yuo don't have a windows XP CD then visit my website
http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Click the Win XP Faq button and take a look
at question 21. You will find a link on that page for downloading a copy.
