Does win xp sp2 alone use 5GB in harddrive? How to reduce the spa

In my new hard drive for laptop, I installed windows xp from scratch.
Immediatelty after that, the windows xp was upgraded to SP1 and then SP2 by
MS's automatic windows upgrade service. But I notice that the used space in
my hard drive changed significantly from less than 3GB to 5GB. Is it
normal? I haven't installed any other programs other than WinXP. Or is
there anyway to reduce the hard disk space used by WinXP?

Use Disk Cleanup and go through the C:\Windows directory and erease all
$xxxxx directories EXCEPT "$hf_mig$".. Leave that one. This will erase the
uninstall files for the updates.

As for going to SP1 then SP2 using Automatic updates - I doubt that - you
must have told it to do this, as SP2 replaces SP1 and all patches after it
up until SP2.

Also - clear out your System Restores.. (Disk Cleanup will let you erase
all but the last one easily.)
