Well, well ... your question has triggered progress of a sort!!
This problem is on a P3 running Win XP HE, which has been upgraded from Win
98 -> Win ME -> Win Xp HE. Sp1 is installed, and all patches, updates etc.
are loaded.
Previously, when I tried to run a task, I received an error message:
General page initialization failed
The specific error is:
0xc000003a: (Unable to find and error message)
Several hours and e-mails with Microsoft helpdesk and playing with Kelly's
Tweaks etc. did not help.
This has nothing to do with user passwords.
I recently downloaded the .NET update, and when I went to check the Task
Scheduler problem, have a new and much more meaningful message has popped
up:
General page initialization failed
The specific error is:
0x80041315: The Task Scheduler Service is not running.
When I went to check the status in "Computer Management/Services", and tried
to turn TS on, I got a pop that says:
Could not start the Task Scheduler Service on local computer.
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.
The file that is missing is
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Mstask.exe
When I checked the registry against another computer i have running XP Pro,
it turns out that the file (and switches) Task Scheduler accesses there is
svchost.exe -k netsvcs.
When I edited the registry key on the problem computer to access this file,
the 0xc000003a problem popped up again.
So:
Is there anyway to get a copy of mstask.exe and try that? I can't find a
copy of it on my computer. I rather suspect this has some legacy
relationship to all the old OS's and IE upgrades, as when I search the MSOFT
KB for mstask.exe, it seems that the references relate to the old OS's and
IE 5 upgrades.
Rgds
