Since my XP been infected and does not function properly, does a Repair of
the XP helps to solve the problem? Example if the IE does not work properly,
my understanding of the Repair then should bring IE to its original state and
in theory it should get rid of the defects cause by virus etc. Am I correct,
thanks for your help

Nope.

Nope. First, IE7 (if installed) should be uninstalled prior to a repair
install and second, malware (eg. virulent add-ons) remains after the
repair install as well as all other program installations.
and in theory it should get rid of the defects cause by virus etc.

That's plain false.
Am I correct,

Nope. "Cleaning a Compromised System"

A repair install will replace your system files...
however since your machine is infected...the repair will not last too
long...
the real solution is to run an updated virus checker and totally remove all
viruses.

Once your machine is virus free...if you still have problems

go for a repair install

It only helps if you have cleaned the infestation since repair does not do
so--it fixes the system only. Assuming repair corrects the problems, you
will then need to install all system updates.
