Does it really update automatically

I have been running MS Anti-Spyware for about a month
now, It says that it will look and install updates
automatically, It seems that the only way that it updates
is when I tell it too, when is it suppose to update. Does
it do it on the background while it starts?
 
Go to Options > Settings > (AutoUpdater) and ensure that the following is
checked:
Enable automatic updates (recommended)
 
And remember ther is still a bug with the version number displayed by MSAS
when you only put the cursor over "spyware def's link". The file (and
download time) are the good one but, until you manually click the link, the
version is not properly displayed.
