Does any software work with Vista?

Well, Vista has really left a bad taste in the mouths of alot of people. I
use my laptop for alot of various puropses, including web design, video
capture and so on, however since I got a new laptop, with Vista on it all I
have is a 3000 dollar headache!. None of my software is compatable, more then
half my hardware is not compatable, what a mess. So now my options, live with
my headache, or buy a new copy of xp pro, and prey I can find all the drivers
for this laptop. In all the years and all the different versions of windows I
have never had this much trouble getting things to work. Thanks for such a
fine product.

What software?
What hardware?

While it is easy to blame Microsoft for ever PC woe one must appreciate that
developing an operating system is a two way street. On one side you have
Microsoft and on the other you have third party software developers and
driver developers.

There is a large number of software applications that 'still' will not work
on Vista. This isn't Microsoft's fault, it is the fault of the software
developers. I have asked many software companies 'when will a copy or update
of a copy be available to run on vista', the answer is, generally, 'when we
are ready to make it work on vista.'

Driver manufacturers have also had ample opportunity to develop drivers for
Vista, but they haven't. Some of the very large hardware manufacturers have
been extremely slow to even update drivers. I have an HP PSC printer which
is 2 years old. HP have developed a 'basic' driver which enables it to work
on Vista. Yes, it works, but i have no refinements like i had in XP. So how
do i get these refinements? Well not from the printer i have at the moment.
My only alternative is to buy another printer that 'is' vista compatible.

Many developer's didn't even both to think about updating drivers until
vista was actually released. While i didn't have much hardware problems
during the early beta testing of vista there were many beta testers that
simply couldn't use vista at all because no vista drivers were available for
there hardware.

While i am of the opinion that Microsoft is 'partly' to blame one should
never forget that there is two sides to every story.

That's odd. Virtually all of my software, some of it rather obscure, works
with Vista. The only exception is my VPN client (Greenbow), and they'll
have a Vista release next month. Hardware is a little more problematic.
Most everything I've got runs, except for a very old HP scanner and an
Adaptec SCSI PCMCIA card (and, I suspect, the scanner will work if I replace
the Adaptec card with a later version). Some things run a little weird (I
have a Netgear gigabit NIC PCMCIA card that works fine, but is reported by
Vista as running at 10 megabits when, in fact, it's running at full gigabit
speed).

One of the tricks to getting older software and hardware to work is to run
the install programs in XP Compatibility mode and Run as Administrator.
Once the programs are installed, set the properties for the executable to XP
Compatibility Mode and Run as Administrator (you do this by right-clicking
on the executable file and selecting the Compatibility Tab).

If the hardware drivers are not suitable for the hardware delivered with
your laptop - contact the manufacturer.

When you bought software 5 years ago for your last computer, didn't you have
to check the box to see if it was compatible with Windows XP? Why would you
think that you would NOT have to check to see if that old software is also
compatible with Vista?

I understand your consternation, but YOU have to do some checking prior to
you spending YOUR well earned money.

Now, you are done ranting and I have responded with nothing in particular!

If you can list your specific problems in detail, maybe someone here will be
willing to assist you.

Some software is written specifically for one version of Windows.. it looks
for an identifier, and then loads as one would expect..

Not all software authors do this, and as a result, the software loads on
more or less any version of Windows..

So why do some do it? Because it forces the sale of new versions every time
that there is a major OS change.. the same applies to hardware drivers.. it
is a great way, and necessary of course, to generate more revenue for the
respective company..

Now go to software and hardware websites looking for fixes, and you may or
may not find them.. why? because the companies don't want to sell just one
product one time and provide free updates forever more is why, and if you
were in charge of a similar company, you wouldn't want to do it either..

Unfortunately, it leaves the end user having to continually pay out more
each time.. the strange part is that the end user expects to replace/change
many items in life but for some reason expects to get computer stuff that
works forever and is essentially free.. if HP made printers that lasted
forever, and attempted to give free lifetime support for them, there
wouldn't be an HP printer division anymore.. they would have gone out of
business years ago.. no company can afford to do that..

You only have yourself to blame in not checking to ensure that the software
etc you wished to use was able to run on Vista.

Never buy a new operating system until after the first service pack is
available, thats when software mfg actually start writting programs designed
for the system. I learned this with XP.

Every piece of software I have installed on Vista works.
The only hardware problem is that Vista will not boot with a USB flash drive
plugged in. At least it won't with the only one I ever left plugged in when
I shut down the computer.

Without more information I have to assume that you are just venting because
you haven't figured out how to install anything yet.

Raise your hand if you believe this post!
maybe it was a typo and he meant a used $300 laptop.

Unless of course that the programs you wish to run are already supported.
All the apps I use can run on Vista so I upgraded...and glad I did.

Working fine here:

Office 2003
NOD32
Belarc Advisor
Firefox
Crap Cleaner
7-Zip
Diskeeper
DivX
Realplayer
Quicktime
Microplanet Gravity
TomTom Home
Battlefield 2
Battlefield 2142
Doom 3
Steam inc HL:S, CS:S and DOD:S.

In fact, the only thing that didn't run was Colin McRae Rally 2005
because the installer looked for specific versions of Windows.

if you had a family of seven, and you needed t buy transport to get them all
around, would you just buy anything and hope that there was seating for
seven provided, or would you look into it first?
