Dodgy & Distorted Sound on Asrock 775i65G Motherboard (Cmedia 9761A)

I've setup a new system using an Arock 775i65G mobo, and for some
reason the sound is, to say the least - dodgy. Sound is ok when using
iTunes and Windows Media Player, but when playing back native sounds
(Windows startup and all other sounds) without using a media player,
it is extremely distorted.

I've uninstalled the software and drivers, cleaned the registry,
downloaded the latest drivers and still it gives the same results. To
confuse matters even more, occasionally when you install another
program, the sound then behaves until the system is rebooted, which
leads me to believe that it could be a corrupted shared file
somewhere.

The onboard chip is a Cmedia 9761A 5.1 channel audio CODEC

OS is Win XP Pro (French version), 1GB RAM, onboard graphics etc

Any help would be greatly appreciated.....

Hi, did you try both XP audio drivers from the web?
Can't hurt, before you wipe the drive.

One thought: Every time you install a media player it wants to hijack all of
the media types to play. I am very careful to check the settings for File
Types on every install and periodically check the defaults. It could be that
a native Windows wav file is set to be played in a media player. Perhaps if
you set the file types for Windows sounds off in every player it might help.
