Distorted Sound

My laptop (Toshiba Satellite M-S169, Windows XP Home Edition) recently
crashed with the dreaded blue screen. I restarted and everything worked
fine. However, the "system" sounds (i.e. like the windows startup sound) are
all distorted. Even my MP3s are distorted badly when I play them through
Winamp. I thought it was a hardware problem with the speakers, but when I
play any sound (i.e. MP3 or system sound samples) with Windows Media Player,
everything is crystal clear. How do I fix this? Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thank you!

Boot into the Safe mode, shutdown;then start normally.

Try:-
Restore System Default Sounds (Line 6)
