distorted sound

My computer's sound when I'm playing movies or mp3's has gotten terribly
distorted. It sounds like the speakers are damaged.

I replaced the speakers and replaced the sound card. It's still bad.

Any ideas?

Do you have XP drivers installed for your sound card?

Yes, of course. And for the original one too.

It used to work fine.

Run the movies and MP3's on a different PC/Laptop, if it
still occures then the problem lies within the files, if
it is a DVD clean the DVD & DVD player.

The problem occurs both with mp3 files and streaming audio. The same files
and streams play fine on my other computer. And sometimes on this one too,
but when it goes bad, rebooting won't fix it!

This one baffles me.
