documents with tables won't open

Before shutting down my old computer, I saved all of my Word documents onto a
CD. After setting up the new computer, I had to install Microsoft Word 2000;
the computer did not come with it. Now, when I try to open files that had
tables a bunch of little squares show up, with no text and no tables. It
also says that these files are read-only. I also tried opening the files in
Works and Wordpad, but that didn't work either. Why is this happening and
how can I fix it? Is it something wrong with the computer, with Word, or
with the CD?

If you saved the files directly from Word to your CD, chances are you
corrupted them -- saving files directly to removable medium often does that.
Copy them to your hard disk using Explorer or MyComputer, clear the ReadOnly
property, then try opening them. If it still fails, try Word's Recover Text
From Any File option (under Files of Type on the File Open dialog). If that
fails, retrieve your old computer.
