document size exploding when saving versions

Y

Yves Drouet

I am using Word XP to edit a 100 page document that had
been initially created in Word 97. I tried to use features
like change tracking and versions, but noticed that the
document size suddenly increases tremendeously from
initially 5 MB to more than 100 MB. This with only one
version saved. When I delete the previous version and
accept all changes the file size goes down again, but as
soon as I save again a version the file size explodes
after that with every little update I do to the document.

I am not using the fast save option !

That's the nature of the beast. You may, instead, want to simply save a copy
with a date as part of the file name each day before you start making
changes. This is a lot cleaner and isn't as likely to lead to file
corruption and bloating.

You might be able to solve your problem by checking a couple of things. Click on "File", then "Properties" and make sure the check box in front of "Save preview picture" is unchecked. If it is checked, it saves a preview copy of every picture in your document, which increases the size of the file. Resave your document and see if that helps

Another thing you may want to check is to make sure you are not using the versioning feature in Word. This feature stores previous copies of your Microsoft Word 2002 document within that same file. To disable automatic versioning, click on "File", and then click on "Versions". Make sure that the check box in front of "Automatically save a version on close" is cleared and click on "Close." To remove previous versions, click " File" and click "Versions." Select the version of the document that you want to delete, holding down the CTRL key as you click each version to select more than one. Click "Delete.

Let me know if eitther of these solutions help.
