Document Protection with word 2003

I looked at information about word 2003 and it offers permissions where you
can enter a date for when the document becomes invalid.
It says you need IRM.
Can this feature be used with office 2003 home edition?
How does the IRM feature work from a home pc. without a server?

Does the expiration feature work for office 2003

There should be a link in the RTM dialog box for obtaining a free
service from Microsoft which uses a .Net Passport for authentication.
Once you use the link you should be walked through a Wizard to assist
you. (Since I already have everything installed I'm unable to provide
the exact steps but everything was pretty easy to follow.)

The recipient of the document would need to have a .Net Passport and
you would need to use their Passport email address when you set them
up as a user of your document. They also need to have the Windows
Rights Management Client 1.0 installed in order to view the document.
If they don't then a wizard should walk them through how to obtain it
as well.

Note Microsoft indicates the free service is offered for a limited
time but so far they have no plans to remove the service.
