Document not saved

Environment:
Windows 2000 Domain
Windows 2003 SP2
Office 2003 SP3/2007 SP1

We are encountering a number of "document cannot be saved" errors on laptops
running Office 2003 SP3. When the users try to save their documents to a
network location, they receive an error saying that the file cannot be saved.
The work around is to select all tabs and copy to a new book which is then
placed on the network drive (eliminating the network issue)

You may be wondering if this is a sharing issue, but I feel like that is not
correct. Reason being, I went onto the server and looked up "Open Files"
under the computer management mmc. There were no other users who had locks
on the file.

The problem started about a month ago to one user, but last week two more
users encountered the same error.

I have heard a number of folks blaming their antivirus and desktop search
for the issue, but I would think that the program would register a lock on
the server from the computer.

Every time I have seen this it has always been a flaky network
connection. The network bounces after the file is opened, then Excel
can't save it back, or anywhere else.

The link Shane points to explains a few other options too.

If it is a network issue then If possible/realistic encourage your users
to copy the file locally do their work then save it back to the network
until the network is fixed.

It is not network issue. We have the same problem but Excel 2003 allows to
save files in network directory Excel 2007 dosen't.
Choosing "Cancel" leads to file delete from network directory.
