Document Map view vs. Normal View

When I open a document that is emailed to me it opens in Document Map which I
hate. How can I set Normal View as my default for opening docs.

To answer your original question, you cannot (without a macro) set a default
view in which to open *all* docs; as the referenced article points out,
documents open in the view in which they were saved, so you can't set in
advance the view in which documents you receive will open.

In this case, however, the "view" doesn't include Document Map since
Document Map is not a view but an addition to a view (the views in which a
document can be saved are those that have buttons on the horizontal scroll
bar); DM can be displayed along with Normal view. Are you perhaps referring
to Reading Layout view? You can disable this on the General tab of Tools |
Options ("Allow starting in Reading Layout").
