Lose view position when insert footnote with document map

I am using Word 2003 in Normal View with Document Map on. When I
insert a footnote, the Document Map disappears. When I close the
Footnote Window, I get positioned at the beginning of the very long
document and have to find my way to the location that I was working
on.

Is there a way to keep the document map on?

Is there a way to avoid losing my place in my document?

The document map and the footnote pane seems to be mutually exclusive; that
is, opening one always closes the other, so I suspect there is nothing you
can do about that, if you prefer working in Normal view.

I can't reproduce this issue. Usually, closing the footnote pane should
place the insertion point at the location where you inserted the footnote.

However, often you can make use of Shift+F5 to get back to the place where
you inserted the footnote (technically, Shift+F5 takes you to the preceding
edit point in the document).
