.doc attachment

I am hoping you can help - if people send me e-mails (safe ones) and the
attachments end in .doc I can not open them. The computer asks if I want to
save or open an attachment then goes to Word Pad but then says there was an
error opening document the same happens even if I choose to save attachment
and then go to Word Pad and try to open it.

I have Windows 98 and Outlook Express 6

Please can you help with the above as I am not that advanced in my computer
skills and can not understand what is happening?

Thank you and waiting for reply,
Austene Hargreaves.

Do you have Microsoft Word installed on your computer?

No I don't only Works 4

Presumably, Works 4 doesn't have Word in it.....
That's why you can't open .doc attachments (doesn't Wordpad do it?)
there are three options.
1. Buy and install Word
2. get the free Word viewer here: http://tinyurl.com/czhow - (the actual
URL is below. WHY oh WHY do MS use these LONG URLs that can't be wrapped
properly in MS mail and news programs?)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=95e24c87-8732-48d5-8689-ab826e7b8fdf

but that will only allow you to view documents.
or 3, the best of the lot, download and install (or if you are on dial-up
look for a computer magazine with it on the cover CD) the latest version
of Open Office.
That will allow you to open, view, edit, create, and save documents in
Word format. Plus an awful lot more - it's a free equivalent of MS Office
2002 without Outlook.

get that here:
