Do you get a separate disk for the XP VM in W7?

Hi All,

Does anyone know if the XP Virtual Machine that
comes with certain version of W7 comes with
a separate disk? Or, is it woven into the
W7 disk?

I ask this in case I

1) need to revert completely to XP, or
2) like a different virtual machine better, such
as Virtual Box.

Many thanks,

As Windows 7 isn't available for purchase yet, and XP Mode is still in RC I
believe, your question can't be answered 100%, but I believe XP Mode will be
available as a download.

Hopefully as an ISO download. Which does bring up the
annoying question as to which key you use to install it. It
would be nice if the W7 key worked on both.

My vendors are saying Oct 22 will be the release date.

I have W7 RC, but no VM. W7RC really, really cleaned up
Vista. I have recommended to all my customers with Vista to
immediately upgrade to W7 (if they have not reverted to
XP by now).

Thank you for the response!

No key is required to install the XP mode OS, matter of fact no OS install
is required, you install the VPC application, and you install the VPC image
download, you don't actually go through the OS installation procedure.

You need to do some "homework" - info at Microsoft. XP mode is
specifically designed to work with Windows Virtual PC installed on Win 7.
It dos not "come with" Win 7. Xp mode and Windows Virtual PC 2007 (RC) are
separate downloads. Important to note that "Virtual PC 2007" and
"Windows Virtual PC 2007" are two different programs.

See http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/.

It is a separate download, but only for Professional and Ultimate not
Home Premium.

Also, the system CPU must support hardware virtualisation and this must
be enabled in the BIOS. See
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/configure-bios.aspx.

Thank you!

Know of a utility to test for it? (The BIOS in a lot of retail
computers gets pruned to the point where you can not tell a
lot about what is on the motherboard.)

Neither of these scenarios will be possible. The download is a
preconfigured virtual machine for Virtual PC.

currently there is a MSI and a MSU to install VPC and the XP mode.
there are several other restrictions.

check with microsoft's web site for current information.

Oh Poop! So Virtual Box without purchasing a separate copy
of XP. (One wonders how much longer we will be able to get XP
and what the anti trust courts will think.)

Thank you for the response!

Yeah, they're doing it again! Remember how much confusion there was over
Outlook Express and Outlook? Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail?

Don't forget AN administrator account vs. THE administrator account...

And the holy mother off all confusions: Windows XP vs. Office XP.
Had a lot of customer get pretty angry over that one. ("Office
XP costs how much?!?! I already bought XP!!!")

Well, if the courts had any sense they'd realize that it is beyond the pale
to require/ legislate one particular company to sell decade old software
when said company has produced much better versions and sell them at
commodity prices. It's not like they are stopping anyone from running
Windows 98 or Windows XP, but it is sort of time to throw the towel in on
them now that Windows 7 is being produced. Microsoft will have supported XP
for nearly 10 years before they stop which is a good length of time and
quite sufficient IMHO. They will probably do similarly for Windows 7.

I always liked that the boot partition was the one that contained the
System32 folder and the system partition is the one that contained the
boot.ini file.

The point about the courts I was getting at was that Microsoft was
going to put other Virtual Machine vendors at a competitive disadvantage
by giving away a free copy of XP that only works with their VM.
And Microsoft does not seem to have the brains God gave a mule when
it comes to these issues. They being convicted monopolists on
two continents. Oh well, they will provide a lot of lawyers
employment in this recession.

Here is an idea. Since XP is so, so old. Just give it away for
free and completely stop support on it. No competitor VM could
bitch about that. The European courts would even be placated!

If the BIOS in an OEM system is the potential problem just check to see
if the hardware virtualisation feature is listed as an option after
confirming that your CPU supports it.

I believe Virtualbox 2.x and later require hardware virtualisation. If
your CPU and BIOS do not support hardware virtualisation you need
Virtualbox 1.6.6.

Antitrust courts will think it's seven years and two versions old and drive
on, I think. Wise people plan for the future, not for the past. ;-)

No. You download an XP virtual machine already configured and licensed. No
cd is required or supplied. If you need to do a repair requiring an XP cd
you will need to provide your own. Any additional XP vm requires your own
copy of XP and product key.
