What do you do with old and dead computer hardware (drives, cards, etc.?)
Just toss them in the trash?

Do NOT just toss your harddrive in the trash! The data on it can be
recovered by someone who finds it.

If you don't care about what's on the drives, sure.

New ideas are welcome, what did you have in mind?

Personaly I like opening the dead drives up and playing with the innards. The
rare earth magnets used in drives are damn powerful and really come one, when
arent insanely powerful magnets fun. Also the platters make decent coaster. I
have a set from some old WD drives on my desk.

As for things like motherboard and such, talk to a local dump about it. There
may be restrictions on it due to the materials used in the make up of PCB's.

if it's only a small amount you might as well just throw it out...
but for even a moderate amount of old equipment you should see if your city
has a recycling center for such

Check around. I think HP has a computer recycling program. But I could be
wrong.

Well, if it is just old, I usually find somewhere to reuse it, or give it to
someone with an older computer.

Other wise I strip them for parts, and for fun things. Hard drives have REALLY
strong magnets inside them, and cool mirror smooth platters. Floppy drives have
motors that can be reused, as well as resistors, an LED, etc.

Most cards I tear apart for spare resistors, connectors, etc.
