Do I really need an LAN connection?

Since an in-shop repair, I've had an LAN connection set up on my XP Home
computer, in addition to an Ethernet connection for my DSL. The tech tells
me that XP automatically sets up the LAN and that it is necessary in order
for my DSL connection to work. I'm a single user with no other network
connected.
Well, the DSL works fine. Maybe I should be content.
But...could someone please tell me if the tech was blowing smoke or maybe
was misguided.

If you think the Tech was blowing smoke, then delete it, but if your
internet connection stops working after you delete it, then you know the
Tech was correct!

Jeez, people give some really 'intelligent' responses sometimes, don't they?

Your tech is probably only guilty explaining things badly but with the lack
of information you provided, it's hard to say. Chances are good he was
right as far as he went. Since you have DSL you also have a router or
gateway or link or switch, etc., so yes, it's probably necessary that what
installed was isntalled. XP does indeed do some things automatically w/r to
to networks. It would make sense especially if your router/whatever had
ports to connect other computers to it.
IF you can tell the difference between the needed parts and the unneeded
parts, you -could- remove or disable them, but ... it's not likely necessary
and probably not advisable.

IMO: Yes, you should be content.
