I'm using XP Pro SP2. Do I need the indexing service? What happens if I
disable it?

No. The indexing service catalogues all your files to make them easier to
find in a search. It speeds up searching, but it slows down your system
somewhat, because it's taking up resources, as well as giving your HD a good
thrashing.

I've had mine disabled for 2-3 years. No ill effects yet.

How do you disable it?

Start>Run>services.msc [enter]

Scroll down to the Indexing Service and double-click the entry to get
its Properties. Click on the Stop button and after the service has
stopped running click on the drop-down arrow and change to "Disabled".
