DNS Zone/Domain Newb question #2

P

Phil

In our lab (Win2K3) we have the following 'domains' (I
guess you could call them) listed under the only Zone:

_msdcs
_sites
_tcp
_udp
DomainDNSZones
ForestDNSZones

However, in our production environment (Win2K) we dont
have the DomainDNSZones, ForestDNSZones 'domains'
listed. The only difference is that our lab environment
was initially AD integrated; should those 'domains' exist
in our production environment? What are they?

Thanks again...

They don't exist in Win2k.

These are used for replication, depending on how you have the zone
replicated. This option was not available in Win2k.

They are you records for the Forest Domain zone. They get replicated to ALL
domains in a forest so they know who the forest root domain is.

OK, so these entries are only needed by a 2K3 domain yes?

What happens if I upgrade to 2K3 AD (which has already
been done) and upgrade DNS to 2K3 AD Integrared and i
dont have those entries?

Well, they are created when installing AD 2k3. If you upgrade a W2k to W2k3
AD, yes, AD W2k uses them as well.
