DNS Search Order

I've always been under the impression that when
specifying DNS servers that XP would perform a DNS lookup
on the first DNS server specified and if the entry was
not found then it would do a lookup on the second DNS
server specified. I just tested this and it does not
appear to be working as I thought it should. I searched
the Microsoft site but could not find anything that
specifically stated how XP DNS searches are performed.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

This is a common misconception. Alternate DNS servers are used only if
there is no reply from the primary DNS server. "host not found" is a reply.
