DNS Problems

I am trying to set up a DC with a child domain in the forest. But as
you can see from the text below that is was I keep running into. But
the funny thing is though I am able to join the parent’s domail, so
shouldn’t I be able to join with dcpromo?

If someone could please help me out on this one that would be great.
If you are wondering what I am doing, I am trying to set up some labs
at home So I can finish up on my labs.

SO here it goes.

The domain name headquarters might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this
is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with
WINS.

If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then
the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS
configuration.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service
location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for
domain headquarters:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.headquarters

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV records required to locate a domain controller for the
domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a
DNS server automatically when a domain controller is added to a
domain. They are updated by the domain controller at set intervals.
This computer is configured to use DNS servers with following IP
addresses:

192.168.1.1

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its
child zone:

headquarters
. (the root zone)

My router acts as the dhcp, so I have configured the perfered dns
settings to 192.168.1.100 and the secondary (ISP) 192.168.1.1

so who is 192.168.1.100 ?
I assume this is the DC from root domain.

You should point your child DC to interrogate himself for DNS (assuming that
the dns service is installed), and setup that the queries to headquarters
domain to be forwarded to 192.168.1.100 (using conditional forwarding
option). And then on root DC do vice versa.
This should work on W2K3; if you have windows 2000 you must work with
secondary zones and zone delegation.
