DNS lookups with VPN

I need help configuring DNS lookups with WinXP, with a VPN sitting on top of
a standard (wireless) network, so that addresses in the internal network are
looked up correctly.

The standard network is configured to pick up the DNS automatically, so it
locks onto whatever address the wireless provider offers (for example
10.10.4.1, at the moment, with T-Mobile). The VPN is configured to use a
fixed DNS address (the Win2003 server on our internal network), i.e.
10.1.1.199.

Depending on the wireless network, all names are being resolved by the
external DNS and not passed through to the internal one. As a result,
Outlook fails to connect to Exchange Server, because it can't find it - when
I ping the Exchange Server by name, it shows that this is being mapped to the
external DNS server IP (10.10.4.1) rather than 10.1.1.199.

I can solve this by configuring the local network addresses into the HOSTS
file on my PC - but it seems I'm missing something obvious.

the DNS should be assigned by the VPN server. it depends on the what VPN server you are using. For example, If it is Cisco VPN, you can configure it. check this page for more details,
