DNS Issue (?)

Glenn Snyder

Hi. We have two Win 2k Servers on our network. We have
those two servers as Domain Controllers. We have an issue
where when users try to connect to one of the servers (via
Mapped Drives or Network Neighborhood) sometimes they
can't get in. We are able to map the path using the fixed
IP address of the problematic server without any issues.

I've looked through every setting known to man and the
only difference between the two servers is that the
problematic server does not have a DNS name when you check
it's properties in Active Directory.

I also found no way to add the DNS name in Active
Directory.

I know it's some sort of DNS issue but I can't figure out
how to fix it.
Thanks,
Glenn

The first thing I would look at is to make sure that your DNS server
has it's "Allow Dynamic Updates" set to Yes. Then make sure that the
domain controller that is having the problem is pointing to the same
DNS server that the domain controller that is working. You can use
the ipconfig /registerdns command to manually force a refresh of the
server name registration in DNS.

You may also want to Stop and Start the Netlogon service to make sure
that all the correct records are created /updated in DNS.

Sounds like a name resolution problem. Have you disabled
NBT?

Make sure that in your DNS Forward Lookup Zone you have
all of the entries ( make sure that you have the four
subfolders ). Do you have a Reverse Lookup Zone? This
might not have anything to do with this problem but I
almost always encourage people to create a RLZ as well.

Let us know!

HTH,

Cary
