Hi All

mydomain.com is currently run on an external dedicated server using third party DNS hosting .
If I were to setup my own DNS server ( using my W2K3 server ) , namely ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com ,
question 1 :
do I need to register the name with internic ?
question 2 :
can I name it ns1.domain.com ( whichever different from my domain name ) ?

Hello Goh,

You need not register your domain name with Internic as it is already
registered but the name server
records need to be changed to the new DNS Servers.

The name of your DNS Servers need not be "ns1.mydomain.com"
They can be anything that you choose to be....but make sure that the name of
your DNS Server is in itself
resolvable which means that you will have to register that domain name with
Internic.

This article should help:

No, you already have the EXTERNAL domain registered so either
that suffices or you can create a new internal-only (private or child)
domain.

You do NOT want the outside world to "find" you internal resources
anyway.

That is probably the name of a "Server", not what one would normally
think of as a domain, especially a Win2000+ domain.

What you want to do is create either a private domain name, domain.local, or
a child, corp.domain.com.

IF you choose to use the same name "inside" as "outside" then you should
think of the these TWO sets of DNS servers are really two separate domains
or zones.

You will add ALL 'external' records to BOTH the internal and external
versions of the zone (separately and manually) but you will NOT add any
private, internal resource names to the external version -- leave that DNS
at the hosting company where it belongs.
