I have problems which seems dns related but I can't see any problems. I have 3 w2k servers and need to change the pdc from one to another. When I run dcpromo i get a message to say that the domain could not be contacted?

You need to format the servers and install windows 3.11 on
them

Danny's got a good point about DNS being setup properly.

Also note: There is no such thing as a "PDC" in W2k or W2k3. That is a
legacy NT4 term. So I am *assuming* you mean that you are trying to promote
a new replica DC into your current domain....

Let's see an ipconfig /all from all 3 of them please, unedited, of course!
Also please provide your AD's DNS domain name, as it shows up in your ADUC
console.

This info will greatly help in diagnosing this.

Thanks...

You do not run DCPROMO to transfer the PDC role from one DC to another.
If the problem is that you cannot run DCPROMO to promote a Win2k server to a
Domain Controller that is another problem altogether.

To get this problem worked out in as little time as possible please post all
of these.
1. ipconfig /all from all Win2k servers listing which is a current DC and
which are being promoted.
2. The Actual Domain name as seen in Active Directory Users and Computers.
The DC connected to will be at the very top, the domain name is on the next
line and has a "+" sign beside it so it can be expanded.
3. A netdiag /test:dns /v from the DC will be very helpful but should not be
required. this command tests DNS registration of the DC and where it is
trying to register. Netdiag is installed from the server support tools on
the server CD or updated netdiag can be downloaded from
http://download.microsoft.com
