DivX Codec?

Long Story Short. I shot video on a super 8 tape with a camera I borrowed.
Had the tape converted to DVD by Kodak. Needed to convert VOB files to AVI
to use with Movie Maker 2. Found a free program called AVI.net to do it.
Converted file would not play in Movie Maker. Found out the conversion took
place in DivX 6.1 Codec. This sounds like I know what I am talking about, but
really just learning as I go along, don't assume anything.

Questions: How do I get Movie Maker to play and edit this AVI file in DivX?

Or do I have to somehow redo the VOB to AVI conversion in a different codec
to be able to use it in Movie Maker. and which codec to use?

Does size/length of file matter in Movie Maker? The movie I shot from
vacation is 1 hour 55 minutes long. Should I try to split that somehow
before trying to edit in Movie Maker (assuming I ever get to that point)

Thanks for all your help. - frank

Franklin,
I don't know if I should say "join the crowd" or not, but for sure join me.
I have the same problem: converted to AVI using VDubMod program, and actually
converted using several codecs, including Divx 6.1. So far Movie Maker will
not import any of the AVI's.
Suggestion: Go to the Post titled: "Import VIDEO - MPG file", below
(currently on Page 2 of posts, it has 9 or more posts), dated 1/24/2006.
There is a wealth of information there and we are still working toward a
solution, but not yet.
Good Luck.

To use avi.net I assume we had installed the divx create trial, do you? Then
the rusteing movie should have .avi extension. If not - when you have an
..divx file - you have to change the extension to .avi. Then check in MM2 at
Compability that you have Divx Demux and Divx Decoder Filter there and
selected. If not, go to the Divx.com, download the free DivX Play or the
trial DivX Create. After installing you will be able to import your video in
MM2 and make every editing task you want.
