disturbing horizontal bar on screen suddenly appeared

suddenly a horizontal bar about 1,5 mm width appeared on my laptop. I am
protected with McAfee security. Is this a virus? How can it be removed? The
bar is very disturbing since it runs over every document etc.

It's more likely to be hardware failure rather than a virus. An easy way to
test is to boot with an alternative operating system such as a Linux Live
CD. I prefer Knoppix, but there are others. If the "bar" appears in Linux,
you know for sure it's hardware and in that case, you'll need to contact
the laptop mftr.'s tech support for repair/replacement.

Reboot the laptop. If the bar still appears on the manufacturer's
splash screen before Windows starts loading, you have a hardware
failure, and it's most likely a fault in the LCD panel. Then, your only
recourse is to contact the supplier or manufacturer. Hopefully it's
still under warranty.

This is a bug in IE, I found the fix myself:


Open "C:\Program Files\McAfee\SiteAdvisor\Scripts\safesearch.js"
in Notepad and paste the following in the Find box:

absolute;z-index:1001;width:100%;height:100%;

replace width:100% with width:98%
