Distribution list

When I open a sent message how would I add that person to my distribution
list? I see add to contacts. I have a distribution called Recruit and I
want to add the email address to the distribution list not as a separate
contact.

As far as I'm aware you have to add the person as a contact first, then add
the contact email address to the DL.

Thats what I was doing but I thought there would be an easier way.
