Distorted sound from satellite connection

I have my E510 connected to my DirectTV receiver via standard coax cable. I
do not yet have any connection to my tv. I have an X-Fi sound card and the
Dell 5.1 speakers. The speakers work "ok" with cd's and games but the
satellite sound is extremely distorted and almost a whisper at full volume.
Any ideas?

Familiar with the default sound mixer (double click speaker icon in
notification area)?

I know it's there... what about it?

Make sure the level setting for audio feed from tuner card is set
properly. Since you say you connected via "coax cable" this assumes you
have a tuner card or similar RF receiving hardware.

all my levels are at 50% if i go higher with the main control, the speakers
crack and distort, I have plenty of volume going to the speakers. All the
voices sound metallic and I hear "tinkling" in the background, like water
dripping into a can... no matter what channel I am on. Oh, and I don't see
"audio feed from tuner card" I have Play control, Wave, CD Player, Mic, Aux,
Line-in, MIDI, and Digital-In. Again I tried raising all of them one at a
time to no avail.

Only other thing I can think of is some sort of volume adjustment in the
satellite receiver's menu system. Can't help you much with that, since
closest I've ever had is digital cable. Have you inquired at any of the
forums listed after searching Google for "Satellite TV forum"? Maybe
someone there has connected digital satellite to a computer tuner card.
