Sound is scratch & distorted.

I'm running Windows XP. Recently my desktop speakers have been giving out an
odd sound to music. It's either echoed, distorted or sounds like the balance
is off. I've updated the driver, I've checked the sound using my headphones,
still the same outcome. I've looked into some info online, the thing is, I
don't know what they mean by reinstalling the driver or where would I find
the sound card.
Can someone with knowledge of what I'm talking about, PLEASE help!!
The provider is Avance Logic, Inc. - they no longer support this.

Go to device mgr, expand the sound tree, locate youre hardware,R.click
uninstall,
do this for all of its hardware, dont restart computer, exit device, shutdown
comp-
uter.If you have a PCI sound card, move it to another PCI slot,if not, then
start
up after a few min.XP will reinstall it.

I did as you said and it did not work. I don't have a sound card that I can
move, so I shut my computer down, waited awhile before starting it up. This
time there was no sound at all.
The system does not detect a device.
Now what?
