Distorted Music

Whenever I try playing any MP3 or Wav file on Windows
Media Player it sounds a bit distorted. I can understand
the words pretty much but the sound quality is real poor.
If I play the files using any other player program the
sound quality is great! I have downloaded and installed
the latest drivers but it made no difference. I am using
an on-board sound card.

Any ideas?

My first suspicion would be WMP's EQ. This preamps, too, so it can
overdrive the music and cause distortion. Try turning that off, and if that
doesn't clear it up, try turning off the other audio enhancements under
WMP's View:Enhancements menu.

If that *still* doesn't help, it may just be DSound - try using waveOut with
WMP via-

See http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
